What is consciousness ? It is a consequence of the wave-like qualities of nature. The Consciousness is the release of the accumulated potential, which exists everywhere where the waves exist.
As once was said by Rene Descartes - "I think, therefore I exist!" I agree. We are the particles of the thinking Universe even more, - everything in universe has its consciousness.
